Stroll or Bike to Lake Merritt, but Don’t Drive!
Lake Merritt is called the Jewel of Oakland, and its encircling landscaped park grounds comprise the city’s top attraction. On any given day, there are myriad joggers, walkers, dancers, children, birdwatchers, boaters, picnickers, and even skaters! It’s especially popular during Shelter-in-Place, so much so that the City of Oakland is significantly restricting parking access along Lake Merritt (and some other city parks). The East Bay Times reports that Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays adjacent streets to the lake will be closed to parking, as well as food truck sales and other vendors. The new prohibitions will remain in place at least through the end of May, and includes the Memorial Day holiday. The Mayor of Oakland asks that we #GiveTheLakeABreak and not overcrowd the park during shelter-in-place!
