Many residents commute from Alameda to San Francisco (14 miles to the west across the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge). Some also work in the city of Oakland a couple of miles to the north. Alameda offers access to quality bus and ferry services to Oakland/San Francisco, sidewalks on almost all streets, and bikeways across town near the water

Surrounded by water, it makes sense that many enjoy visiting Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach for swimming and water sports. Visitors can also take in a picnic in the California sunshine or go for a bike ride along the beach's riding trail. Museum lovers can head to USS Hornet, a Sea, Air, and Space Museum that was once a WWII aircraft carrier and part of the Apollo 11 recovery mission.
